Jolly Bodies could not function without your coaches. Plain and simple. We are where we are now because these humans believe in what we do (and now in each other).

They work behind the scenes, they are patient and willing to pivot when we have new ideas, they trust us enough to let us know how we can better show up for each of them, and they make Jolly Bodies better. I don’t know how else to explain it other than this:

Jolly Bodies is my child. If you have kids, or something that is just uniquely yours that you are passionate about, imagine having 20 people with their own passions/kids investing time and genuine care into yours.

Our coaches are the ones executing the fine details of our operation. They bring what is on paper to life. And they make it look easy. They are willing to go through intense discomfort via self reflection, spend their precious time fine tuning each of their coaching skills, and care deeply about making your workouts at Jolly Bodies an experience that brings you joy. They are courageous, smart, and kind. They are not interested in being perfect. They are interested in making sure no one feels invisible. They don’t want to stop learning once they become coaches. They constantly want to become better for you. They crave new challenges, share ideas, and work to support one another. They cringe at the idea of performing for you or pretending to be something that doesn’t reflect their unique self. They never stop trying to get better. They have humility. They’re irreplaceable.

Last night, I got to do a Control class for the first time ever. Like fully surprised, didn’t know what was coming. @hi.lacerbeam choreographed a beautiful session and worked with Burke and with the coaches for months to pull it off. We had the most wonderful time, and this is the absolute best Christmas wish I could’ve ever expected from the extraordinary people that take care of Jolly Bodies and make it alive.

What do yall say we have another loop around the sun doing this?

I cannot believe we’re coming on two years in America’s smile factory. I like to share our history every now and again because:

1) it’s important to acknowledge of how far you’ve come, even if you’re not where you want to be today, if you’ve been working toward something, it matters to monitor your progress and remember how far you’ve come. it gives you the confidence to keep pushing forward, and teaches you to have faith in yourself. That’s wonderful.

and

2) we want folks know we’re 100% home grown and developed. Like, field of dreams style. We’re not a franchise. We didn’t have that backing of an already developed corporate model to tell us how and what to do. We built it piece by piece. One day at a time. Tested, refined. re-tested again (and will continue to refine because we think it’s fun!)

We hope that inspires other creators from all kinds of different industries to have the courage to go for it and know that they don’t have to rely on a corporate structure that may put restraints on your ability to create and/or may silence your voice (if that’s not want you want). Your brain is important and valuable, and if you’re willing to dig and learn and get your ass kicked over and over (you get better at accepting and dealing with it), you can do it!

I remember teaching my very first class at UA in September of 2005. I was so scared that when I went to introduce myself I was shaking so much that the microphone headset looked like it was vibrating 😂. And once I started moving, that all went away. Because it was me and like 50 other gals just having some fun doing kickboxing together. And I never stopped.

I am filled with gratitude that today I got to go back to campus and share that same love all us millennials had for fitness in 2005 with a new generation. I am so proud to be standing here with these students 20 years later, still somehow feeling like I’m just getting started.

In fitness and in life, growth requires discomfort. When we train, our muscles only get stronger through the tension of challenge.

The same goes for the mental stretching of who we’re becoming as people. The humility needed in order to learn so that we can become better humans is the invisible version of weight lifting.

Tension isn’t something to run from. And while it feels awkward and scary to start the practice of holding it, the more you do it, the less scary it becomes. Eventually, it doesn’t feel scary at all. My encouragement to you is to meet your tension this week with curiosity. If you allow yourself some space to be curious about it, every moment of discomfort you’re willing to work through shapes a stronger, wiser, more grounded version of you. And that’s good stuff.

Y’all have a great week of training ❤️

Fitness marketing often simultaneously exploits your fears while boasting “scientific” evidence to support buying into it. Feeling all those emotions makes it hard to see it for what it is: a game that we’ll always lose.

I don’t dislike the players. We’re the players. I love us. But I do detest the game because it’s intentionally stacked against us. Most of the time we’re not even aware that it is. Whether the game is a diet, off-label use medication or new workout craze, the house always wins. Unsustainable methods always lead to unsustainable results.

You might not know it, but you already have the ability within yourself to improve your health in a way that doesn’t require you to feel scared or ashamed. If that sounds good to you, come see us. We think you’re gonna like it here.

2️⃣ Coach @abbylnolan led the charge in leg warmers and headbands through her entire pregnancy. Human Resources is pleased to report that mother and child are doing well and that did indeed arrive with a firm understanding of an 8-count. We are so happy for you, @abbylnolan

3️⃣ Facilities is pleased to announce the addition of 60 feet of reflective surfaces in studio 2. While these surfaces will contribute to improved technique and spatial awareness, they may also increase spontaneous dance breaks and hair adjustments. Please plan accordingly.

4️⃣ In alignment with our ongoing commitment to safety, preparedness, and member comfort, we are pleased to announce the installation of a Shart Emergency Kit, now conveniently located on top of the AED in the rainbow walkway. The kit has been stocked with essential items designed to provide rapid response in the unlikely event of such an occurrence. While we anticipate that use of the kit will be rare, its presence reflects our proactive approach to addressing all possible contingencies within a fitness environment. Never can be too careful.

5️⃣ Per company guidelines, every guest at Jolly Bodies HQ is entitled to five free classes. Consider it our way of saying “welcome aboard, partner.” Use them. Enjoy them. Sweat responsibly. Link can be found in our biography.

Hi it’s your friendly neighborhood fitness doctor lady reminding you that calorie burn on fitness trackers as a way to measure workout effectiveness is one of the most effective ways to get you to hate working out. Fitness trackers are a tool among many different tools 🧰 you can use collectively to help you achieve your goals, but it shouldn’t be the only one.

Heres some real signs you’re making progress (these are all stories y’all have sent me in in the DMs!)

4) you started lowering the fitbench step down a few levels for your first pushups

Hi it’s your friendly neighborhood fitness doctor lady reminding you that calorie burn on fitness trackers as a way to measure workout effectiveness is one of the most effective ways to get you to hate working out. Fitness trackers are a tool among many different tools 🧰 you can use collectively to help you achieve your goals, but it shouldn’t be the only one.

Heres some real signs you’re making progress (these are all stories y’all have sent me in in the DMs!)

Split training means training different muscle groups on different days. It’s typically reserved for personal/small groups OR if it IS seen in the group ex world, the programming style is usually too variable from instructor to instructor to provide consistency (it’s like if you go to an Italian restaurant wanting spaghetti but there’s sushi, cinnamon rolls, and spring rolls on the menu as well - it’s confusing to know what the objective is)

So my challenge was - how do I bring a personal training approach into group exercise that’s focused on muscle building while still controlling for programming quality and consistency? Is that possible?

In other words : what if I keep designing, then teach coaches those workouts, then provide a space for coaches to coach those workouts to others?

That’s when we expanded to build the strong studio at jolly bodies! It’s almost been a year and it’s been outstanding to watch yall grow in confidence and embrace lower impact hardcore strength training. If you’re wanting to build, not sure where to start, recovering from injury, and/or want to make sure your bones are protected, then come on over!
